News Update :

Apple starts selling an unlocked iPhone 4 in the US

Thursday, June 16, 2011

I'm sure many of you already know about this, but if you visited Apple.com anytime in the past day or so, you probably noticed that Apple started selling unlocked iPhones in the US, which they had done in other parts of the world for about a year now, I believe. Personally, I think it's a good thing, but for most people it doesn't matter.

Previously in the US you could only buy an iPhone 4 locked to AT&T (I'm leaving Verizon out for now) at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model, but now you have the option of purchasing an unlocked GSM version for $649 for the 16GB model and $749 for the 32GB model.

While the unlocked iPhone 4 will allow you to choose your own GSM carrier and change carriers at any time, in the US there are only AT&T and T-Mobile, which you can only use 3G with the iPhone on AT&T. So, it's not really worth it, unless you plan on traveling a lot to other countries and utilize local networks.

I'd recommend though, if you have to get an iPhone 4 (I'm an Android user), that you just get a subsidized version locked to AT&T and unlock it yourself. It will be cheaper although you would have to unlock it with every update. I believe it's also comes out cheaper if you get it subsidized then cancel the contract early too.

Any world travelers out there, or someone with money burning a hole in their pocket, can go to a US Apple Store or online and get an unlocked iPhone 4 now with free shipping!
