Is this what Apple's new iPhone 5 will look like?

There are many different rumors regarding Apple's next-generation iPhone (which will be introduced later this year), but all of them seem to agree on one thing: the new handset - quite possibly called iPhone 5 - will have a display of at least 4 inches. This being said, KitGuru has managed to obtain some photos which reportedly show "a pre-release test sample" of the iPhone 5. Spotted "in the Far East", this alleged new iPhone does seem to have a 4-inch display, and is slightly longer than the iPhone 4S - as you can see in the photos below. Can we expect the new iPhone to look like this? Of course we can. Is this truly what it will look like? Well, this we do not know. But more leaks are likely on their way before Apple officially announces the device (maybe in late August, or early September), so let's sit back and wait for them.

7.9mm iPhone 5 to come with 4.1' screen, 1136 x 640 resolution

A familiar rumor is back - the new confirmation coming from KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo, who is said to have sources close to Apple's supply chain. The next incarnation of the Apple iPhone could turn up with a 4.08-inch display of 1136 x 640 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and a brightness of 500 nits (matching the iPhone 4S). This, despite not technically being HD worthy, would result in a density of good 319 pixels per inch, preserving the Retina moniker, and moving away from the familiar 3:2 aspect. Mingchi Kuo also has info on the cameras and thickness of the iPhone 5, saying that the front-facing camera will be HD-capable, making those FaceTime calls all the sweeter, and that the camera will be moved from the left side of the earpiece to the center (much like on the iPod Touch). The back camera will reportedly have 8 MP sensor and a 5 element lens similar to the 4S but with a larger aperture of f/2.2 (currently f/2.4). That would allow more light to reach the sensor and improve the low-light performance. As for the profile, Kuo claims that the next iPhone will measure the impressively thin 7.9 mm, which is a huge improvement over the iPhone 4S's 9.3 mm. The bigger display bit is probably the most persistent of all iPhone 5 rumors, only this time the said screen size isn't 3.9" but 4.08". However, altering the screen aspect ratio might lead to poor backwards compatibility with apps, which have been developed for the 3:2 aspect ratio of all iPhones to date. Still the width of the screen, if this rumor turns out true, will remain 640 pixels, which is the same as the current iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, meaning apps could run just fine with blank bars on each side until their developers get round to adapting them. The next iPhone, or iPhone 5, is rumored to arrive in the fall, in either September, or as was the case last time, October. As always there are a bunch of rumors surrounding it, one pointing at an aluminium back and larger screen. Apple's new iPhone 5 could be only 7.9mm thin, HD front-facing camera rumored

A new report from Taiwanese firm KGI suggests that Apple's sixth-generation iPhone - possibly called iPhone 5 - will be significantly thinner than the previous model (iPhone 4S, released in October 2011, and measuring 9.3mm). In a table that shows the iPhone 5's cameras specifications, KGI mentions the device's thickness, too. Reportedly, that's of only 7.9 millimeters. This would make the new iPhone thinner than both the Samsung Galaxy S III, and HTC One X (which are two of its main competitors). It looks like Apple will keep the 8MP Sony sensor for the rear camera of the iPhone 5, but plans to upgrade the front-facing camera with an HD-capable sensor. According to Apple Insider, the Taiwanese firm also seems to confirm that the next iPhone will have a 4 inch display (4.08 inches, to be exact) with a 1136 x 640 pixel resolution – for a 16:9 aspect ratio. By all means, increasing the screen size and resolution of its new smartphone is an important thing for Apple to do, if it wants to keep selling tens of millions of units. We still don't know exactly when the new iPhone will be officially announced. If production starts in late Q2 / early Q3, as rumored recently, the smartphone will likely not be unveiled in the next few months. We'll let you know when new details about this appear.

“iPhone 5 testers” SMS scam now targeting Android users

Apple's iPhone 5 is one of this year's most anticipated mobile devices, so it's not surprising that some want to take unfair advantage of that. There's an iPhone 5 testers SMS scam that's been reported by iPhone users since early February (there's even a thread over at Apple Support Communities about this), and now it's targeting Android users, too. As you can see in the screenshot below (taken on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus in Canada), the SMS reads: "Apple is looking for iPhone 5 testers! The first 1000 users that go to [scam website] and enter a code will get to test & keep a new iPhone 5." Needless to say, if you get this kind of message don't reply to it, and don't click on any link it may include. Because you will certainly not get any iPhone 5 to test and keep.

Apple taking NFC payments mainstream with iPhone 5

Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard's head of emerging payments, sat down with Austin Carr of Fast Company to discuss the future of credit cards. “We're rapidly moving to a world beyond plastic,” said McLaughlin. “In many ways, plastic is just convenient packaging.” The future of on-the-go payments may lie in the hands of near-field communication but unfortunately, adoption and availability have been extremely slow and limited. While NFC technology has been featured in a number of Android devices, MasterCard seems to think it won't go mainstream until an iPhone is equipped with the mobile payment solution. Read on for more. “The timeline is always as rapid as it makes sense for consumers,” McLaughlin said. “That's a combination of having a critical mass of the merchants, which is what you're seeing right now, and getting devices into the hands of consumers. I don't know of a handset manufacturer that isn't in process of making sure their stuff is PayPass ready.” When asked specifically if Apple was one of these manufacturers, McLaughlin stuttered. “Um, there are…like I say, any handset maker out there,” he said. “Now, when we have discussions with our partners, and they ask us not to disclose them, we don't.” Apple has repeatedly shown that it is one of the few consumer electronics companies right now with the ability to transform and create entire industries. Prior to iTunes and the iPod, virtually no one paid for digital music, and media tablets were a non-factor until the iPad. Does the mobile payment industry need Apple to become a mainstream phenomenon? “Well, anytime someone with a major base moves forward, it advances what you're doing. So of course,” McLaughlin said. “I think as merchants provide these better interfaces for consumers–a better way of transacting–I think any consumer-focused technology provider would want to take advantage of it.”

What you really want to do is bet your own money on your guess. Paddy Power is offering some options, but it is not the general “digital textbook” guess you want to bet on — it is rated at a measly 1x6. An iPad Lite announcement would hand you a 6x1 quote and an iPad 3 even 9x1. You could go for Apple's TV for 16x1, the iPhone 5 for 20x1, or, if you are among the big risk takers, an “Apple Robot Teacher” for 40x1. iPhone 5 to feature slimmer design, may operate on all 3G and 4G LTE networks

Apple's next-generation iPhone will be slimmer than its current iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models according to a new report, and it may feature a quad-mode chipset that will work across all 3G and 4G LTE networks. In a note to clients on Friday, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty wrote that Apple's business will continue to grow despite slowing demand high-end smartphone market. Mirroring a small piece of countless reports, Huberty says Apple's next-generation “iPhone 5″ will feature a new slimmer case. The iPhone 5 will also feature a new quad-mode chip from Qualcomm that could allow it to operate on all 3G and 4G LTE networks, Huberty wrote. Finally, the analyst says Apple will launch the next-generation iPad 3 tablet some time in the first half, at which time it will lower its price on the current iPad 2 tablet to attract a broader range of customers. BGR exclusively reported last month that Apple is preparing to launch a completely redesigned iPhone this fall with an aluminum case and a rubber or plastic bezel that will cover a new wrap-around antenna.

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 may come with quad-core processors, iOS 5.1 beta reveals

Apple is undoubtedly already working on the next generation iPhone and iPad, which we'll call iPhone 5 and iPad 3 even though Apple may choose to release them under different names. In the past few days, we've seen many rumors about the next iPad, but none of those said anything about its processor. This bit of leaked info, though, may prove to be very good news for would-be buyers of Apple's next-gen mobile hardware. 9to5Mac found references to a quad-core processor in the latest iOS 5.1 beta's processing-core management software. The references come thanks to a hidden panel that describes cores which are supported by iOS devices. In the image above, “/cores/core.3″ almost certainly refers to a quad-core CPU architecture. That's because references to Apple's dual-core A5 processor are “/cores/core.1″, and single-core CPUs are referred to as “/core/core.0″. Those are the existing naming conventions within Apple's processing-core management software. Therefore it's quite clear that Apple is at the moment testing a quad-core device with iOS 5.1. What makes this more interesting is that if the iPad 3 is to launch in March, as we keep hearing, than it's clearly being tested right now with Apple's software. Which, you guessed it, would make this the device with the quad-core processor. And following last year's logic, when the iPad 2 first got the dual-core processor that eventually made it to the iPhone 4S, it's probably not a stretch to think that the next iPhone will sport a quad-core CPU too.

Ticonderoga: iTV, ‘iPad mini' and iPhone 5 with NFC and 4G extend Apple's lead in 2012

Apple will further extend its lead in the technology sector this year as it launches a number of new products that will leave its competition scrambling, a new report suggested on Tuesday. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White made Apple his top pick in 2011 and the stock was his top performer, having grown 26% during his coverage. In 2012, Apple remains White's top stock pick as a trio of new products is set to extend Apple's lead in the new year. Read on for more. “We believe Apple's portfolio in 2012 has the opportunity to create more excitement around the story with our expectation for the unveiling of iTV, ‘iPad mini' and a major upgrade with the iPhone 5, while we expect the company to finally come to grips with its surging cash balance and issue its first cash dividend,” White wrote in a research note on Tuesday. The analyst first reported in October that Apple would launch an “iPad mini” in 2012. While a number of reports suggested the new slate would in fact be a smaller iPad positioned between Apple's high-end iPad and the iPod touch, White used the term “mini” to describe the upcoming tablet's price point rather than its size. He sees Apple launching a new high-end iPad in 2012, and a less expensive mini model priced in the high to mid-$200 range will accompany it, White believes. More recent reports suggest that Apple will continue to sell the iPad 2 at a lower price once it launches the iPad 3. Beyond a new iPad that will attack the market at a lower price point, the analyst sees two other Apple products as being huge for the Cupertino, California-based company this year.”We believe 2012 will be the year that Apple unveils iTV in pursuit of a new $100 billion plus LCD TV market opportunity, reinventing a product category with a Smart TV that delivers a clean, crisp and simple experience that connects seamlessly with the Apple digital ecosystem,” White wrote. “Last April, we were the first on the Street to uncover concrete evidence that a full blown Apple TV was already flowing through factories in China for prototype production and we believe it's about time for the company to unveil its latest innovation.” Finally, Ticonderoga believes Apple's next-generation iPhone will feature a cosmetic redesign and a huge feature upgrade. “The iPhone 4S has been a big hit but we expect iPhone 5 to be even bigger with our expectations of a new unibody form factor, larger screen, NFC and 4G,” White wrote. BGR exclusively reported last month that Apple will launch a new iPhone this fall with a redesigned aluminum case.

Ticonderoga: Aluminum iPhone 5 is happening, launch to ‘shatter' sales records

Despite rumors, leaks and punditry that now suggest a worst case scenario - no iPhone 5, just an iPhone 4S and an entry-level iPhone 4 - Apple will indeed unveil the mythical aluminum unibody iPhone 5 on Tuesday that will “shatter” Apple's previous smartphone sales records. In a note to investors on Monday, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White wrote that Apple has a blockbuster in store for consumers this fall, with unprecedented demand that will result in Apple's biggest launch ever. “We expect the iPhone 5 to get a makeover with a sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure that more closely resembles the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4, which will not only prove more aesthetically pleasing but also stronger, lighter and avoid the back-side “glass breaks” of last year,” White said. “With this new enclosure, we believe this will provide Apple with the opportunity to expand the display size by at least one half of an inch to 4 inches and hopefully bigger. Apple will clearly need to upgrade the processor speed to at least a Dual Core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, while upgrading to a 8 mega pixel 1080p camera that is now also on the Galaxy S II.”

The sleek new Apple smartphone will have consumers drooling like no iPhone before it, White believes, and the result will be astronomical opening weekend sales. “We believe Apple will benefit from pent up demand and will shatter the 1.7 million iPhone 4′s sold in the first three days last year,” the analyst stated. “Additionally, the iPhone is now sold to a record number of carriers (228 carriers at end of 3QFY11 vs. 154 at end of 3QFY10 during the iPhone 4 launch) and can operate on CDMA networks, and we believe China will play a more important role as well. We also expect Apple to be more aggressive in rolling out the iPhone 5 to international markets during this launch versus prior years, similar to what was experienced with the iPad 2.”

White reiterated his Buy rating on Apple stock with a price target of $666.

Apple May Also Offer 64GB iPhone 4S and 64GB iPhone 5 This Year!

Since long, the iPhone has only been available in two storage capacities - 16GB and the 32GB versions. An 64GB iPhone was captured in a video earlier this year, but there was no indication from Apple about its potential launch.

According to the report, both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 will launch in 64GB storage capacities besides the usual 32GB and 16GB storage models we've been seeing in iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and older versions.

However, considering that this year's event is expected to be a big launch in Apple's history, and for the fact that some of the recent rumors have been shaping into truth, we are coerced to believe on this possibility.

As a refresher, Apple is expected to announce its next iPhone(s) at the upcoming Apple media event scheduled for 4th October in Apple campus in California, USA.

One of these two iPhones is believed to be known as iPhone 4S. It is expected to sport a faster dual-core processor with iPhone4-esqe design aesthetics and iOS 5. We may also see a iPhone 4S 64GB version besides 16 GB and 32GB models.

The other iPhone will be most likely christened as iPhone 5. It is believed to come packed with a larger egdge-to-edge display, a faster dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an improved 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, iOS 5, perhaps 4G LTE support and much more.

All 64GB iPhone 5 and 64GB iPhone 4S models should come in two standard color variants - black and white, just like the other storage models.

Apple is expected to announce both the iPhones in just about 3 days from now. October 4 is the date, for a reminder.

iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 Briefly Go Live on Cincinnati Bell, Reveal Specs & Prices!

Cincinnnati Bell, a mobile service carrier in the United States, briefly put up advertisement for iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, testifying that the two will go on sale, very soon.

It also reveals some of the most-sought details including core iPhone 4S specifications like the CPU, storage capacity and camera specs besides the price at availability of each of these devices.

The iPhone 4S is priced at $99, which by all fair means, is the 'cheaper iPhone' that we've been talking about. It will be similar to iPhone 4 in terms of external aesthetics and will sport the same 3.5" display that iPhone 4 has.

However, there's a faster dual-core A5 processor under-the-hood against the iPhone 4's single-core A4 processor. The camera appears to be just the same with a 5 megapixel sensor, and the device seems to be available in 16GB and 32GB versions. The iPhone 4S price for the 32GB version should be naturally more.

The iPhone 5 specifications mentioned on the site include 4" display, 8 megapixel camera and 4G internet connectivity. The iPhone 5 price is listed as $639 for a 32GB version. Just as rumored,the it has a larger screen at 4.0" which is expected to use edge-to-edge display technology.  8 eight megapixel camera (perhaps, with dual-LED flash) on the back, will be an upgrade from the 5 megapixel camera found in iPhone 4 and also reported in iPhone 4S).

iPhone 5 will also be powered by the dual-core A5 processor. It will support "4G speeds" according to the report. However, we are not entirely sure if that could possibly refer to LTE technology in any way.

There's nary a word on the market availability dates for any of these devices. We didn't even notice a "Add to basket" button as you'd find on different phones that are already available through the reported carrier.

It is possible that Apple may announce both the devices simultaneously on October 4, 2011 at Apple media event in California and the devices may begin to ship soon after.

It is worth noting that the screenshots posted above were provided by a TUAW reader Cory L. who happened to stumble over them while browsing through the wireless prepaid section of the Cincinnati Bell website, which is also an indication that the devices will launch under pay-as-you-go schemes as well, besides the usual postpaid plans available through AT&T and Verizon.

Photo shows iPhone 5 silicone cases now arriving at AT&T stores

Silicone cases for the iPhone 5 have started to show up in AT&T stores according to an image received by MacRumors. The images, if authentic, set to rest the constant questions volleying back and forth over whether or not Apple will release a device called the “iPhone 5″ or just a device called the “iPhone 4S” this year. The cases suggest, as most reports have stated, that the iPhone 5 will indeed sport a thinner profile and a mute switch on the opposite side of the phone. In addition to Friday's leak, on Thursday BGR exclusively published an image of AT&T internal inventory system that revealed an incoming stock of Case-Mate cases for the iPhone 5. BGR also published exclusive first images of the Case-Mate cases on September 15th, before the company quickly pulled them from its website. Apple will hold a press conference on October 4th in Cuperinto, California after which we will finally be able to put these rumors to rest.

iPhone 5 cases pop up in AT&T's inventory database

With only five days left before Apple officially spills the beans on its latest smartphone creation/s, we have yet another iPhone 5 related rumor. This time, it comes from AT&T's own inventory database, where cases for the most anticipated smartphone to launch this year have surfaced.

iPhone 5x4S placeholders pop up at Cincinnati Bell

The truth about Apple's next generation will be unveiled in less than 48 hours, but that's not stopping the speculation train from churning out its last steam to its final destination. Here's a screenshot of Apple's iPhone 4 placeholder at the website of Cincinnati Bell's pre-paid service, i-Wireless, accompanied by a $639.99 price tag and a handful of specs: 32GB, 4-inch screen and 4G data speeds. Our friends over at TUAW have also procured a screenshot (after the break) from the same site, displaying a $99.99 16GB iPhone 4S, sporting a 5MP camera, 3.5-inch screen and an A5 processor. Of course, there's also a chance these are just placeholders, but we're hoping Tuesday's announcement will bear dual fruits, nonetheless.

Radio Shack inventory screen pegs iPhone 5 for Sprint

Every retailers involved are preparing themselves for the massive sales that will hit them once Apple announce their new iPhone(s), and it seemed that in US, almost all carriers will have the new iPhone in their lineup, unlike last year's launch where we see only AT&T had the iPhone 4 (followed few months later by Verizon).

If this screenshot, apparently culled from Radio Shack's inventory system, is any indication, Sprint will indeed be among the carriers offering the iPhone 5. That lines up just right with previous reports from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, slating the phone to hit the Now Network in mid-October. There's no indication of actual dates at this point, but if Sprint's getting Apple's next-gen iPhone, we're guessing we'll hear more about it on Tuesday.

Alleged iPhone 5 cases pop up at AT&T stores, thinner and wider

Just days before the official "Let's talk iPhone" event kicks off in Cupertino rumors about the next-gen iDevice are heating up - big time. The latest are the iPhone 5 cases that had popped up in AT&T's inventory database. Well now we have pictures to share of them.

A ninja dressed in AT&T shop assistant clothing has sent these pictures to MacRumors. They show the previously leaked Case-Mate cases for the iPhone 5. Judging by them the next incarnation of the iPhone will be way thinner than the current iPhone 4, the LG Optimus Black and the Samsung Galaxy S II - somewhere along the lines of the iPad and sharing the same design as the slate with similar tapered edges.

This iPhone 5 mockup was made using CAD drawings, CNC tools and some aluminum. Now we should stress that if you haven't already guessed it this isn't the next iPhone and it's not some real-life prototype Apple lost in a bar or anything of the sort. It's just a very crafty mockup based on the leaked case designs so far and nothing more.

Still this could turn out to be very close to the real deal but we'll know the answer to that one in just 5 days anyway.

Apple inventory points to new iPhone 5, 4S and iPod

With just two business days to go before Apple's scheduled October 4 event at its Cupertino HQ, the rumor mill is kicking into overdrive. While we know that it's an iPhone event, Apple has not confirmed anything regarding an iPhone 5, an iPhone 4S, or even, given that the fall event is traditionally for iPods, if it will be making any changes to the iPod line. However, a few recent additions to the company's inventory system suggest that all three of the above rumors might be true.

9to5Mac reports that three new iPod models have cropped up in Apple's inventory system with the codename N81A. N81 being the codename for the 4th generation iPod touch, 9to5 believes that these N81A models are the same device with a minor tweak: The color.
