iPhone 5's launch date the biggest internet debate right now?

Friday, August 5, 2011

Apple missed its usual June time-slot to debut a new iPhone and, up until now, rumors have widely pointed toward a September release for the device. Even as recently as last week we were hearing talk of a September release. Gizmodo cited an AT&T employee in reporting that the carrier was rejecting all applications for vacation time during the last two weeks of September “due to an event blackout.” The employee went on to say that in the past this has only been done for iPhone launches. However, contesting that rumor is a post over on All Things D that was published yesterday.

John Paczkowski cites sources with knowledge of the situation that say reports claiming AT&T has blacked out employee vacations during the last two weeks of September in preparation for the new iPhone are incorrect.

“I don't know why AT&T's calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it's not for an iPhone launch,” Paczowski's source said, adding that the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S, or whatever you want to call it today), is not expected until October.

No other details (such as a date or location for the launch event, or the phone's release date) were provided, and, as always, Apple is staying quiet. We'll keep you posted.
