A few weeks ago, everyone has pegged September as a most likely release date for next generation iPhone. There were even rumors about AT&T cancelling all employee vacations for the launch.
Now AllThingsD has it that there won't be any new iPhone this September. Instead, Apple will have a surprise event sometime in the second half of October for iPhone 5x4s.
And it sort of makes sense.
Apple usually does have a major launch event in September. But more often then not - the launch is mostly about music business/iPods. With a promised September availability of iCloud service, it will make sense for Apple to put a spotlight on it's music service/iPods at that event.
With iPhone 4 still selling like crazy, with no slowdown in sight, there is no need for Apple to rush the next generation iPhone. Just have it ready before holiday shopping season starts, and sales will explode.
On the other hand, there was that major product transition that may affect Apple's numbers in Q3, mentioned during earnings conference call. It's hard to see what other product except for iPhone could have such impact. It will also be strange to see a next generation iPod Touch announced before we get a chance to see the new iPhone.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens in September.
The only thing I'm sure about right now, it's that this is not the last iPhone 5 launch date rumor we are going to see in the next couple of months. And we will keep guessing /obsessing right until the time the next generation iPhone launches.
